A Rose Garden Walk

By: Claude Edwards

Dedicated in 1975, and officially known as the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden.  This attractive feature of Balboa Park beckons thousands of visitors every year to amaze in the spectacle of hundreds of varieties of roses, displaying a full range of form and color. Their blossoms include white and yellow to pink and violet, and combinations thereof, some boasting unique fragrances. Located on the east side of Park Boulevard east of the familiar Bea Everson Fountain, the garden is renowned as a wedding spot in spring when it is in peak bloom. Perched above the wild slopes of Florida Canyon, the three-acre garden consists of four distinct planted areas tended by the Park and Recreation staff aided by San Diego Rose Society volunteers. With great anticipation, Jim Greene, one of the Blind Community Center’s knowledgeable volunteers, happily accompanied two of our longtime members, Tom and Ethel, to visit the rose garden. In addition to enjoying the walk to and from the BCCSD, they all appreciated the peacefulness of the rose garden area. They were also delighted to find the rose bushes exultant with thousands of flowers.
