BCC Open House

by Claude Edwards

Taking place on Friday, October 27, the Blind Community Center’s (BCC) Open House was much-anticipated and well-supported, focusing on the wealth of enjoyable activities offered every week, not only to BCC members, their friends and family, but also to the public at large. The Open House brought together representatives from the San Diego Center for the Blind, the Braille Institute, the Helen Keller Center, the downtown public library’s ICAN Center, the Marquez Pop-up Store and our upstairs neighbor, the Lions Optometric Vision Clinic.

They all provided event participants opportunities to learn about their respective programs and services. In addition to the exhibitors, there was a snack bar selling hot dogs, pizza, nachos, soda, and more.  Throughout the event, examples of the BCC’s activities took place downstairs, from demonstrations of creative craft-work in the craft room, games and fun in the youth room, accompanied by energetic music, and an adaptive martial arts exhibition. BCC members contributing to these activities were martial arts instructors Joshua and Andrea, game and music providers Andrall, Debbie and Lyn, talented Marlene, crafty beaders Diane, Joyce, Lucy, Nena and Ivan.  Our thanks to volunteers Christie, Sharlene, Dora, Jim, Jonathan, and Shaunda.
